Holland World Cup 1998

Holland is my country of adoption!

I have to say the amount of Holland teams I have painted is showing how popular the team of this small country has been and is still!

Great talents, attractive style of play and always on the verge of success but never really managed to cross the finish line!

It will happen one day for sure, the Netherlands are still producing talents!

Looking at World Cup 1998, Holland had a team with great names! Van der Sar, Reiziger, Stam, De Boer, Bergkamp, kluivert, Seedorf, Cocu … One of the favorites?

Actually their performances during that particular World Cup were up to the expectations!

Despite a slow start in the Group stage with only 1 win and 2 draws composed of Mexico, Belgium and South Korea, The Netherlands finished top of their group to face in the Round of 16 the last appearance of a unified Yugoslavia team!

Holland won 2-1 and went on the the Quarter finals to play …Argentina!

A remake of the 78 WC final? Well not this time! The Oranges passed the test with another 2-1 win! What could stop them then?

Semi Final, Marseille, 7th July, Brazil is on the other side of the pitch! Tension is up! The game is tight  and end up 1-1 after full time.

The extra time did not see any goal scored, it was time for penalty shoot out, the worst way to qualify or get knocked out a competition!

Unfortunately Holland lost that Penalty shoot out by 4-2, and fought for the third place. However the positive vibe was nto there anymore and Holland could not win the Bronze medal.

World Cup 1998, will still remain one of the best campaign of the Netherlands national team!

Contains 11 field players and 1 flicking goalkeeper.
